Updated Demo: 4/20/2021

The last time I played Lake the Demo was riddled with bugs and was partially unplayable. I can only assume that the developers tested their game again and saw how buggy it was and made the necessary changes because the Demo went from being about 35 Minutes long to about a 2 hour long Demo.

When I originally did coverage for Lake, I did coverage about the bugs that were in the game. So since they have all been fixed for the most part, of course, there were some bugs but not nearly as many as it was when I first covered the game.  So, I will now talk about Lake and what I thought of the less bugged version of the game.

I’d like to give you another refresher on what Lake is about. Lake is a heartfelt story that is currently in development with a release date set for the Summer of 2021. In Lake, you play as Meredith Weiss, a developer who is going back to her small hometown in Providence Oaks, Oregon to take over her dad’s job as a mail carrier for two weeks. Upon arriving in her hometown she is met by Frank, another mailman who has worked with Mederith’s father Thomas for years.

Now that the bugs have been fixed, Frank takes you through the tutorial on how to perform your job as the new mail carrier and after explaining this you head back to your childhood home for the evening. The next day you start your route and begin to meet old and new faces since your 22 years away from Providence Oaks, Oregon.  Although you are delivering mail there is more to just delivering the mail. As Meredith goes on her routes she catches up with old friends and learns what she has been missing out on since she last left 22 years ago and she even meets some new faces as well.

One of the things that made me squeal with gee was the pop culture references in the video shop. Which had that nice little old-school nostalgia even if they were parody movies of famous movies. I couldn’t help but tell if this shop was supposed to be a nod to The Last Blockbuster which is also located in a small quiet town known as Bend, Oregon or if this was all just coincidence. I’m only saying this because there are some similarities like the video store being in a small town, and even the name of the character being close to the awesome employee at The Last Blockbuster and so if that is a nod to her, then kudos to the devs for doing something that amazing.

The driving in the game is fantastic and it is quite relaxing. I think the reason that the video for the updated version of the demo is so long is that I got lost in the driving and roped into the story. Yes, you can auto-pilot to places to make the trips shorter, but sometimes the autopilot will glitch and you have to reload the game for it to work. So sometimes the longer drive is better to do. There were two other minor glitches in the game that I noticed and that weren’t deal-breakers. One is when you return the cat to Miss Jenkins and the other is if you park too close to a car it puts the game into the first-person mode. Again not demo breaking glitches but figure that I should mention them so that the developer notices them.

Overall after the bugs being addressed, I can now 100% say that if you are into story-rich games that you can chill and vibe to then you have to add Lake to your wishlist. Lake again is due to come out sometime this Summer 2021 for PC via Steam.

Lake is a heartfelt story that is currently in development with a release date set for the Summer of 2021. In Lake, you play as Meredith Weiss, a developer who is going back to her small hometown in Providence Oaks, Oregon to take over her dad’s job as a mail carrier for two weeks. Upon arriving in her hometown she is met by Frank, the current mail carrier.  I realize that this a demo of Lake, and although the game is beautiful there were a lot of bugs in the demo, and because the game is in development with a potential release date of Summer 2021, I did want to bring attention to some of the bugs I encounter with the hopes that the developers would be able to fix them before the launch of the game so that the launch of the games smooth.

The first bug I encountered in the game was during the intro as Frank picks up Meredith. They get to the service center outside of town and they just kind of sit there in silence. There is no dialogue whatsoever, and then Meredith just gets out of the truck. So, I was a bit confused like did she get out because it got awkwardly silent, or was she supposed to be doing something. I mean to be fair the dialogue between Meredith and Frank cuts out before the title screen pops up. So after walking around a bit with the hopes this would trigger something I finally ended up having to skip the intro of the game.

After skipping the intro of the game I ended up at the post office and was told to go deliver the packages, which wasn’t surprising as this is what she came back to the town to do. However, there wasn’t much of a tutorial on how to do this task and I had to figure it out myself. I’m not sure if it is explained in the intro, but I was able to figure out the controls as I went through.

The next bug I encountered was when I discover that you can either drive to the location or use autopilot. I auto-piloted to the General Store and this was sort of a mistake as I was already at the general store and the camera zonked out and put me into the first-person mode, and I had no idea how to get out of the first-person mode or if there is even supposed to be the first-person mode. Eventually, I was able to get out of the first-person mode when Meredith went to the back of the mail truck to pull out a package.

Once you figure out how the delivery system works the game is pretty fun and is very relaxing. Meredith drops of packages and gets to have conversations with the locals. Which is where I encounter my next bug. When Meredith goes to drop off the package to the Cat Lady Miss Jenkins she does not look at her to talk she stares off into space to talk to her. I don’t know why this occurs but she just keeps talking to her by not looking at her, which was a bit scary.

Another bug that pops up or maybe this is like a spur of the moment thing is as Meredith goes to drop off her last piece of mail, a package pops up for the service center which was not on the list at all, so it threw me by surprise when it popped up. Nonetheless, I delivered that package and then was onto my last stop where I gave a piece of mail to a lumberjack who talked to Meredith and then cut the conversation short, so that left me intrigued on what was going on but because this is a Demo, I know that that won’t be answered until the game’s full release.

So Meredith is then asked to return to the Post Office, which is where I encountered my last bug of the demo she gets to the Post Office and ends the day. After ending the day the game takes over and everything disappears and it’s just a parking lot and scenery. The town seems to have disappeared and the Post Office is gone. So I walked around a bit and fell through the scenery and this ended my gameplay of the demo.

The good thing about the game is that this was only a Demo, so this does not reflect on how the finished product will be, so the reason I choose to point out the bugs is that I want the game to do well because it is relaxing and I am invested in the story. Like, I would love to know exactly why Meredith returns home. Yes, she is filling in for her father but after 22 years away why are you returning home now. What happened to her father?

Another good thing about the game was there was Voice Acting in the game so it made it easier to follow, and made it even more interesting to watch and play. Having the voice acting pulls you in and gives the characters life which is good. I just hope the bugs are fixed before the game fully releases.

Otherwise, if you are looking for a heartfelt story about returning home and doing the right thing. Then I suggest you Wishlist Lake for PC Via Steam.
