Cursed Castilla (Maldita Castilla EX) is the predecessor for Ghouls and Ghosts and does it very well.

In the game you play as A knight who has been appointed by the King to read the land of Castilla of the demons and creatures of the night, that now plague it's lands. Collect Moira's Tears in order to rid the kingdom of the dark lord.

The game also offers 4 different endings. This happens to be one of my favorite games, and is one of my go too.
